About

My name is Kiley Burkhart, and I operate a music recording and production project studio called Gates of Dawn in Westerville, OH (close to Columbus and within the central Ohio area). I am passionate about helping independent artists bring their songs to life. I specialize in the indie rock/pop world as a producer and multi-instrumentalist, but I am open to working on all kinds of music. My goal is to offer something between what you can get with home recording and a standalone professional studio. I am able to keep affordable rates as I do this part-time and I am currently in a facility with shared space. I am careful to only take on a workload that I can handle along with my full-time job.

This studio is a dream of mine turned into a reality, and I truly love what I do here.

Pricing

I provide affordable project-based flat rates and a relaxed environment with flexible scheduling and payment options. I invoice through PayPal, which offers multiple options for payments including Pay in 4, PayPal Credit, etc. A 50% deposit is required to hold your project and time, with the remainder due when work is complete.

Flat rate production

$500/song
- 5% discount for 4+ songs
- 10% discount for 8+ songs
Includes pre-production, tracking, comping, editing, mixing, and mastering. You will retain ownership of your multitracks, final mixes, masters, etc., please let me know if and how you want copies of them. I will keep them with my studio storage for one calendar year after completion of your project. After you take ownership, I highly recommend keeping them stored somewhere secure and backed up.

Thoughts on mastering: I do include my own mastering with this package, but I would recommend referring this out to another engineer who specializes in mastering. I have used Jon Fintel of Relay Recording (local studio) for all of my professional mastering needs, and I fully endorse his work. In my opinion, it’s an important final step of the production process, and the project is best served with some fresh ears.

Mixing
- $100/song (includes up to three revisions)
- 10% discount on four or more songs
Drum, bass, or guitar recording

Practice/rehearsal space

$50/two hour block
$90/four hour block
$160/eight hour block

Note: You will check in and check out with me in person. The studio can accomodate a three or four musicians comfortably, five is doable but tight.

Monday - Friday: 5 PM - 11 PM
Saturday: 10 AM - 7 PM
Sunday: as needed

In an arena flooded with audio prowess, there are a few things that can set a studio apart: thoughtfulness, communication, meticulousness, and a collaborative nature. Not only did Kiley have the technical know-how, she display all of these other qualities. From our first meeting, she was clear about her process and her values. It was obvious she was on top of everything, and her consistent, patient, organized communication was there throughout the recording process. Her practice of charging per song instead of per hour was great for our budget and peace of mind. The first recordings of the bass and drums were enough to know we were in good hands. She had a clear and efficient process for getting and choosing from takes. I especially appreciated the attention to getting me the best mic for my vocals. Our drummer was excited to be able to sit down with her to ensure every note hit his rhythmic standards. Throughout these recording sessions, she shared what she was doing and why, which felt both respectful and informative. After each session, Kiley was sure to align us all on what our goals were for the next session. Once the tracks were comped, we had opportunities to asynchronously contribute our comments for any changes. We are so happy with the end product - our first split single!
